What is GMS?
GMS stands for Google Mobile Service, which is a bundle of applications and services built by Google that comes pre-installed on GMS certified Android devices. GMS is not part of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which means device manufacturers need to be licensed to pre-install the GMS bundle on devices. In addition, specific packages from Google are available only on GMS-certified devices. Many mainstream Android applications are dependent on GMS package capabilities like SafetyNet APIs, Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM), or Crashlytics.
Pros of GMS-certified Android Device:
The GMS-certified rugged tablet can be pre-installed with a series of Google applications and gain access to Google Play Store and other Google services. That enables users to make full use of Google’s rich service resources and improve work efficiency and convenience.
Google is quite strict about enforcing security patch updates on GMS certified devices. Google releases these updates every month. Security updates must be applied within 30 days, except for some exceptions during holidays and other blockades. This requirement does not apply to non-GMS equipment. Security patches can effectively fix vulnerabilities and security problems in the system and reduce the risk that system being infected by malicious software. In addition, the security patch update can also bring about functional improvement and performance optimization, which will help to improve the system experience. With the development of technology, the functions of systems and applications programs are constantly updated. Applying security patches and updates on a regular basis helps ensure that systems and applications are compatible with the latest hardware and software.
Certainty of both the robustness and composition of the firmware image based on having to complete the GMS process. The GMS certification process involves strict review and evaluation of the device and its firmware image, and Google will check whether the firmware image meets its security, performance and functional requirements. Secondly, Google will check various components and modules contained in the firmware image to ensure that they are compatible with GMS and conform to Google’s specifications and standards. This helps to ensure the composition of the firmware image, that is, its various parts can work together to realize various functions of the device.
